In Western Maryland, a proposal to build wind turbines alongside a coal mine, on a heavily logged mountaintop next to a transmission line, has just been nixed by state officials who called it too environmentally damaging. Along the coast of Nantucket, Mass. -- the only sufficiently shallow spot on the New England coast -- a coalition of anti-wind groups and summer homeowners, among them the Kennedy family, also seems set to block Cape Wind, a planned offshore wind farm. Their well-funded lobbying last month won them the attentions of Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), who, though normally an advocate of a state's right to its own resources, has made an exception for Massachusetts and helped pass an amendment designed to kill the project altogether.

Slashdot shares its comments. [ with its usual troll and baits and pulls and bias]

Latin America's leftist wave

It could be right that the cold war world definitions of left and right are obselete in a globalized world, but a strong under current right under the nose of the world's most powerful contry cannot be ignored. While the mainland is hard selling its capitalist ideas to asian new economic kiddies a powerful leftist wave is blowing over South America.

The change in Americas is quite evident with a number of countries voted for left and a new powerful generation of neo-communist leaders- those with old world communist ideas and a new globalist perspective - emerged. The rise to power of Lula da Silva in Brazil, Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, Nestor Kirchner in Argentina , Tabari Vasquez in Urauguay and most recently Evo Morales in Bolivia and Michelle Bachelet in Chile shows Latin American's leftist shift.

The most distinguishing factor of all these leaders are their bend towards modernization, following an orthodeox economic policy - one based on fiscal discipline, budget surpluses and an anti-inflationary monitory policy. Some of the old world leftist stands are easily dialuted, like in Brazil, where the President Lula decided to pay back the IMF debt or like in Argentina where the government paid back the debts by withdrawing one-third of its reserves raising popular outrage.

All these governments are trying to identify them as socialists and they see a new uprise in their economies with a boom in the world commodity market. They are well aware of their demanding position and is aligning towards collectivist economies. And naturally all them declared friendship with Fidel Castro and seek his embrace.Venezuela is a shining example, with a new messianic leadership and strong economic and political stands they showed that they can even make waves in North of Atlantic.

L'Italia gira il colore rosso !

Tired of Berlusconi's policies, Italian people decisively voted for a change and they choose none other than the center-leftist Romano Prodi.

It will be interesting to see Prodi's stand on Italian foreign policy.
